Be Autism Aware

I believe there should be more acceptance and awareness of autism, especially nowadays. Our diverse society represents the importance of highlighting equal opportunities and promoting the voices of disabled people and their families.

Can Having Autism Be Seen As A Positive?

In short, yes. As a young person with autism, I have experienced misunderstandings and adversity. It is a rollercoaster ride with a whirlwind of emotions.

People with autism may have difficulties with navigating social cues, recognising and expressing emotions and managing situations which are unfamiliar and unpredictable.

Although living with a neurodiverse condition can be at times, isolating, intense and challenging, it can also be empowering, positive and beautiful.

Positive Characteristics Of Autism:

Ambitious
Unique
Talented
Inspirational
Shining
Meaningful

Although everyone with autism is different, they can exceed your expectations, providing small reasonable adjustments are in place and they are in the right environment.

Generally, people with autism are very honest and direct in their communication. They are often highly focused in a particular area, which could be an advantage when studying or in the workplace. They can be more attuned to their surroundings, having a good eye for detail.

Personally, I work well independently, have excellent written communication skills and am very driven to achieve. I am conscientious, articulate and organised.

Making A Difference And Autism Awareness:

I urge you to take the time to listen to those with autism, as they are the experts of their own lives. Please give them a chance to be included and show compassion. Mostly, people with autism respond well to a calm, positive and flexible approach with praise and encouragement.

Please try to look beyond the ‘label’ and acknowledge our strengths. Please do not give up on people with autism. You may find you learn a lot from people who have a unique view of the world.
